Boney M, the iconic Euro-Caribbean vocal group created by German record producer Frank Farian, soared to fame in the late 1970s and early 1980s with hits like "Rasputin," "Rivers of Babylon," and "Daddy Cool." Their infectious blend of disco, pop, and reggae rhythms, combined with catchy melodies and flamboyant stage costumes, made them a global sensation, leaving an indelible mark on the music scene of the era.
Boney M played for free in Gibraltar, as part of the “Rock’s Christmas Wonderland Festival” related to switching on of the festive lights down Main Street on November 24th to 25th 2023.
Maizie Williams, who sung at Casemates on November 25, was one of the original members of the band. She also was on the Rock in 2015 to play their first Christmas special there. She explained to Panorama newspaper how the Rock makes her “feel at home because it is not entirely British.” “It’s a wonderful place – I love the people here and every time I come, I have a great time,” she said. “I like that people speak Spanish and the temperament of the people here which is not at all British but is absolutely wonderful”. She said on that visit that the ‘strong melodies and easy lyrics that everyone can relate to’ were the reason for the band’s success. When she ended performing, she said “With our music we have touched many lives of people who have been in very difficult situations.”
Boney M's visit to Gibraltar was a celebration of music's power to transcend geographical and cultural barriers, bringing together a community to share in the joy of dance and song.
