Boney M, the Euro-Caribbean vocal group created by German producer Frank Farian, rose to global fame in the late 1970s and early 1980s with hits such as Rasputin, Rivers of Babylon and Daddy Cool. Their blend of disco, pop and reggae, combined with distinctive stage presence, made them one of the defining acts of their era.
Boney M performed in Gibraltar as part of the Rock’s Christmas Wonderland Festival on 24th and 25th November 2023, celebrating the switching on of the festive lights along Main Street.
Maizie Williams, one of the original members of the group, took to the stage at Casemates on 25th November. She had previously visited Gibraltar in 2015 for the band’s first Christmas performance on the Rock. Speaking to the Panorama newspaper, she described Gibraltar as a place where she feels at home, highlighting its unique character and the warmth of its people. She also reflected on the band’s enduring appeal, noting that their success comes from “strong melodies and easy lyrics that everyone can relate to”.
Their return to Gibraltar brought a sense of nostalgia and celebration, with their music continuing to connect audiences and contribute to the Rock’s lively cultural calendar.
