Catalan Bay

Catalan Bay, known in Spanish as ‘La Caleta’ is a small bay and fishing village in Gibraltar on the eastern side of the Rock away from the main city which has a variety of restaurants and stunning views of the Mediterranean. The true origin of the name of Catalan Bay is unknown, but a couple of theories exist:

The first suggests that the bay is named after a group of around 350 Catalan (from Catalonia) military men believed to have settled here after having assisted the Anglo-Dutch forces who won the capture of Gibraltar during the War of Spanish Succession on 4th August 1704.

However, no evidence exists to prove that Catalans settled in Catalan Bay and although this theory is regularly used as the supporting argument for the origin of the name, it is only a supposition that they ever did.
From its ancient caves to its modern marinas, every corner of Gibraltar holds a story waiting to be discovered, inviting visitors to experience Gibraltar’s history on a journey through time and across cultures.
St Michael’s Cave, long believed to be bottomless, has interested visitors to Gibraltar ever since the days of the Romans. It is an unique tourist attraction located within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in Gibraltar.

The beautiful Alameda Botanic Gardens were established in 1816 and comprise some 6 ha of Mediterranean and subtropical garden.
The Gibraltar Museum houses an extensive and fascinating array of cultural and natural history collections, prints, paintings and drawings, and objects.

Gorham's Cave - On the east side of the Rock of Gibraltar, the site rises from sea level where several caves including Gorham’s and Vanguard are located, to the highest point of the Rock, 426 metres above the sea at the top of the Mediterranean Steps.
