Dwight Eisenhower

General Dwight D. Eisenhower was a leading American military figure and later the 34th President of the United States. As Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force during the Second World War, he played a central role in the defeat of Nazi Germany.

He arrived in Gibraltar on 6th November 1942, recognising its strategic importance as a gateway to the Mediterranean.

His visit focused on preparations for Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa. Gibraltar served as a key command and coordination point, where Eisenhower worked closely with British and American forces to organise the complex logistics of the operation. Planning sessions often extended late into the night, reflecting the scale and urgency of the task. The success of Operation Torch marked a significant turning point in the war, reinforcing Gibraltar’s role in the Allied campaign.

Eisenhower’s time on the Rock highlights Gibraltar’s importance as a military stronghold, linking the territory directly to one of the defining operations of the Second World War.
