John Mills

Sir John Mills was a British actor whose career spanned more than seven decades, appearing in over 100 films. He became known for portraying determined and grounded characters that resonated strongly with audiences.

His connection to Gibraltar is linked to the film I Was Monty’s Double, which was partly filmed on the Rock in early 1958. He later returned to Gibraltar, staying at The Rock Hotel on 14th November 2000.

I Was Monty’s Double tells the story of a World War II deception operation involving a double for Field Marshal Montgomery, used to mislead German forces. Gibraltar’s role as a filming location reflected its real strategic importance during the war, adding authenticity to the story. The use of the Rock helped bring attention to its historical significance and distinctive setting.

During his later visit to The Rock Hotel, Mills expressed his appreciation for the hospitality, leaving signed portraits as a gesture of thanks. His connection to Gibraltar links his work to the territory’s wartime legacy and its role in historical storytelling.
