King Charles III, born Prince Charles of Edinburgh on 14th November 1948, has been a central figure in the British Royal Family throughout his life. As the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, he assumed the throne after decades of public service and preparation.
Following his marriage to Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, the royal couple chose Gibraltar as the starting point for their honeymoon on 1st August of that year.
Departing aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, their time in Gibraltar marked the beginning of their journey as a married couple. The image of the Prince and Princess of Wales leaving the Rock became one of the defining moments of the occasion, watched by crowds locally and followed around the world. Gibraltar’s role as the departure point reflected its close ties to the Royal Family and its importance within the wider British network.
In more recent history, Charles was formally proclaimed King of Gibraltar on 11th September 2022, reinforcing the continuing relationship between the Crown and the territory.
