Peter OToole 1968

Peter O'Toole

Peter O’Toole was an Irish-British actor known for his commanding performances on stage and screen, most notably as T. E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia. His role in the film brought him international acclaim and secured his place in cinema history.

On 6th July 1962, during a break from filming Lawrence of Arabia in Morocco, O’Toole travelled to Gibraltar with co-star Omar Sharif aboard the Mons Calpe.

The visit was recorded in the ship’s logbook, where both actors left their signatures, creating a lasting link between the film and Gibraltar. Although brief, their time on the Rock offered a pause from production during what would become one of the most celebrated films of its time, later winning seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

O’Toole’s connection to Gibraltar forms a small but notable part of his wider career, reflecting the international scope of his work and the enduring legacy of Lawrence of Arabia.
