Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, is the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He has developed a distinct role within the British Royal Family, with a focus on public duties and charitable work.
He visited Gibraltar with Sophie, Countess of Wessex, from 7th to 9th June 2022 as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
The couple received a warm welcome across the territory, taking part in a series of official engagements that reflected the close relationship between Gibraltar and the United Kingdom. During the visit, Prince Edward thanked the people of Gibraltar for their “generous hospitality” and “immense welcome”. Their programme included meetings with local communities and officials, as well as public appearances where they engaged directly with residents.
Speaking at a formal lunch, the Earl commented on Gibraltar’s “very long and very distinguished history”, while also noting the significant changes since his previous visit in 2012. He praised the development of new facilities and the progress made across the Rock, highlighting its continued growth.
The visit reinforced the enduring ties between Gibraltar and the Royal Family, with Prince Edward’s presence reflecting his role in maintaining strong connections within the wider British community.
