Princess Diana

Princess Diana, known as the People’s Princess, was admired worldwide for her humanitarian work, grace and compassion. Born Diana Spencer, she became Lady Diana Spencer in 1975 and married Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, in 1981. Together they had two sons, Princes William and Harry.

On 1st August 1981, Gibraltar served as the departure point for the royal couple’s honeymoon.

The Royal Yacht Britannia, carrying the newly married Prince and Princess of Wales, set sail from Gibraltar, marking the beginning of their journey. In the moments before departure, Princess Diana was seen greeting well-wishers, her warmth and presence leaving a strong impression on those gathered. Though brief, her time in Gibraltar reflected her natural ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

Princess Diana’s legacy extends far beyond this moment. She became one of the most influential humanitarian figures of her time, notably campaigning against landmines following visits to Angola and Bosnia, where she met victims and brought global attention to the cause.

Her death in Paris in 1997 was met with worldwide grief and marked a turning point in the relationship between the Royal Family and the public. Her memory endures through her charitable work and the lasting impact she had across the world, with her connection to Gibraltar forming a small but meaningful part of her story.
