Sean Connery

Sir Sean Connery was a Scottish actor renowned for his portrayal of James Bond, the fictional British spy created by Ian Fleming. Connery’s embodiment of the suave and sophisticated Bond made him a cinematic icon, celebrated for bringing depth and charisma to the character.

Sean Connery’s connection to Gibraltar extends beyond the world of film. On 6th December 1962, he chose Gibraltar for his wedding ceremony, marking the beginning of a personal chapter closely tied to the Rock.

Following the ceremony, Connery and his wife stayed at The Rock Hotel, where they enjoyed views overlooking the Botanical Gardens. The couple later reflected on their time in Gibraltar as one of the most memorable moments of their lives, appreciating both the setting and the experience. Connery returned to Gibraltar on 14th May 1989, when weather delays extended his stay at the hotel. During that visit, he dined in the restaurant, enjoying a French à la carte menu, including a flambéed peppered steak, while guests gathered in hopes of catching a glimpse or securing an autograph.

Although Connery himself did not film in Gibraltar, the Rock features prominently in the James Bond universe, most notably in the opening sequence of The Living Daylights (1987). The dramatic training exercise set against Gibraltar’s landscape remains one of the series’ most recognisable scenes, closely associated with the legacy Connery established as Bond.

Sean Connery’s legacy as James Bond transformed the character into a global cultural icon, with Gibraltar forming part of the wider story that continues to connect the world of 007 with real locations.
